Turn the Page Tuesday Great Summer Reads

The beauty of August is that I get a chance to read as I have the month off work. In between friends and family visits, that is!
I re-read GILEAD by Marilynne Robinson as I had frustratedly previously picked it up and put it down repeatedly. It was the 2005 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It turned out to be a really beautiful story. A Dad, a church minister, the Reverend John Ames, writing to his son. I now want to get the second book - HOME - to read.
My second book, I picked up in a charity shop and quickly realised perhaps why its' previous owner had put it in the charity shop. I abandoned reading it and have it in a growing pile of items to take to the charity shop myself!

Book number 3,by Francine Rivers looks at the life of 5 women: Tamar,Ruth,Rahab,Bethsheba and Mary in the Bible. Beautifully written called UNVEILED. Sensitively and powerfully written and contains stories of hope and love and courageous women.

Know your strengths by Marcus Buckingham includes your own magic password for you to do an online test - it is not about your personality but rather your strengths - there are over 30 and it comes up with your top 5. The ethos of the book is about us as individuals harnessing and developing our strengths, rather than as often is the case to work on improving our weaknesses. The online test is run by Gallup. I did it a couple of years ago but it was interesting to see my results and read the book again.

My holiday find was pure delight.I walked into an amazing craft shop, stuffed full of quilting fabrics and funky knickknacks to browse over. It was the words LAYER CAKE that drew me in. Imagine! Me with my love of cake and discovering a connection between cake and quilting! I made a quilt when I was 17 - just the patchwork bit, so the quilting bit is my new challenge. Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Quilt Charms by Pam and Nicky Lintott is both beautiful and inspiring. It seems as if quilting has become a little easier these days. The hexagonal quilt I hand made with paper pattern magazine cutouts is apparently a thing of the past. I have had fun looking through this and now am the proud owner of a now seemingly huge pile of fabrics to begin my winter project - a quilt.

I am loving reading The Ivy Chronicles by Karen Quinn - funny, lighthearted novel as a newly become single Mum re-builds her life in NYC and sets up her new business as a kindergarten admissions advisor. Similar to a Marian Keyes novel perhaps. A fun read and - a brilliant bargain charity shop find.
Turn the Page Tuesday is the place to check for more fabulous reads and people to meet.
What have you read lately?

Not many pages turned.

I haven't turned that many pages this month, it seems, for TTPT (Turn the Page Tuesday). Sorry. Let me explain.
I have several books still on the go this month.
First, Live like you mean it, by Eric Delve.

We are reading it as a housegroup and are all finding it hard going. Bits we love: like encouraging us to face our giants in our own lives, the things that hinder us. Also, we love the stories surrounding david from the Bible. The boy who was the most unlikely, perhaps to be chosen. Fearless, trusting in God, he went for it. However, we are struggling to be inspired with the rest of it. I think we have all been expecting to be challenged more. Maybe we just need to challenge ourselves, to live like we mean it?
I am still reading this book: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

It is moving along slowly, perhaps too slowly.
Meanwhile, I have my head in these cake books.

Less than 2 weeks until my nieces wedding and I am baking and icing THE wedding cakes!
Please check out some great reads, from those who have actually read a book or two this month, other than a cake book, at TTPT.
Have fun and share what you have read too!

The Winter House

A really lovely book to read.
The Winter House, by Nicci Gerrard.
I started it in the snow which seemed apt at the time, as this is the setting for the book. I had finished it over a month ago, but missed writing about it last month for Turn the page Tuesday as I was on my rather gorgeous and lovely spa retreat!
Apologies for not taking part last month.
The story is set in Scotland where 3 friends are reunited in a house. One of the friends is dying of cancer and the story of these friends lives and their friendship unfolds as they reflect and remember their lives. A love story and unrequited love, really.
Or is it?
Read it for yourself.
It will probably make you cry.
I did several times.
Oh and please check out Turn The Page Tuesday over at some of a kind for more inspiring good reads to find, next time you wish to curl up with a good book, or lie in the bath reading, or sit in the garden relaxing in the sun as you read.
I love to do all 3.
Just not at the same time.

Wednesday's Turn the Page Tuesday.

Yes, I know it is Wednesday and I am a day late for Turn The Page Tuesday...sorry, but...Yippee!
I finally finished this book:The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
It took me waaay toooo long to read just the last few pages. I had nearly finished it a few months ago and then, fatally, left it unfinished.
Tonight, I relaxed in the bath and read the last few pages.
An intriguing book, magical in places. A love story, tangled lives, mystery surrounding the Cemetery of Forgotten books set in Barcelona. It is set in a beautiful city, where I have been and the book was recently translated into English. It would have been better if I had completed it a few months ago before I fatally put it down and left it as I rather lost the flow with it towards the end.
I had this book recommended to me as I had so loved reading The Time Traveller's Wife, which is brilliant brilliant brilliant! the movie is good but the book is wonderful.
If you want me to tell you more, I can!!!
In my mini pile to read next is his next book: The Angel's Game.

Also, as recommended on Turn The Page Tuesday a couple of months ago - Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen

and The Winter House by Nicci Gerrard.

I have had a busy few months with job searching and starting a new job in January.I got these 3 books as one of the 3 for 2 deals at Waterstones for my Christmas treat. I was sooo tempted to start but also wanted to finish Shadow of the Wind. I am now beginning to re-surface from starting my new job and looking forward to tackling my mini pile of chosen books!
You can check out other inspiring reviews and participants for TTPT over at some of a Kind here
So now I am really looking forward to starting a new book - and it is half term week mid February... yeah.
I am sooo looking forward to hibernating.
Question is...
Which one first?

Reflections and Inspirations

This is my photo for day 3 of 365. A day for time to reflect and Inspire. Enjoy.
I have been looking back over my journal and reflecting on some of the wonderful things that has happened in 2009 and how the Lord has been so faithful to me.

It helps to reflect on 2009 as I look forward to 2010 and some of the ways I might FLOURISH in 2010.
I hope these 9 Reflections from 2009 inspire you too.

1. I started the year with 2 bugs that led into post viral fatigue which lasted for months and I have had to pace myself all year - and yet, I thank God for such amazing times of rest and some things he taught me whilst snuggled under a duvet. He reminded me of how I am safe with Him, loved and accepted and how rest is part of God giving us a chance to get our breath back - as it says in the message Bible in Psalm 23 - and then He sets me in the right direction. Yippee!

2. Last year, the Lord gave me the word CHANGE. I had been busy doing lots of voluntary work over the years, being involved with pioneering and developing some work with Special Needs for children and young people and their families at some national events here in the UK. I sensed the word change I felt it was time to pass on the baton for 2009. The scripture that colleagues had for me was - Isaiah 54 - which really is about change and enlarging and thinking Big!

3. This word ENLARGE and think big had me begin to ask God to help me apply it to all spheres of my life. Life was quite different with post viral fatigue and with no planned or specific ministry in 2009 it really was a year for laying things down and having time and space. I began to dream dreams for some of the things in my life that have been hidden and pushed to one side in my life. A time to look at my creativity, time to begin to de-clutter, tidy, dream, plan, prepare. I wrote my list too of things to do in this next year before my next birthday - and called it my wish upon a star list.

4. I have had it on my heart to write some things down for a while over the last few years but it hasn't really been much of a year for productivity, more a time of being. I was desperate for some creative outlet, though, so I began blogging! A way of bringing to re-birth, fanning into flame some of my CREATIVITY. A friend at church gave me this verse from Timothy, as she had been praying for me - fan into flame the gifts that God has given was a timely and significant verse of encouragement. I have so loved joining bloggy land! I have so loved connecting with Make some art Mondays, Turn the page Tuesdays and gaining fresh inspiration and fun and finding some great new friends in bloggy land. Thank you Rachel at myslightlycrazyworld for a lovely day spent with you, playing pass the baby to start my blog here at creative tails.

5.It has been a time when God has proved himself faithful and the God who cares deeply about the details in my life. I was in touch with a guy for a few months and hoped it might lead somewhere. I wasn't sure if it was leading anywhere, except up a dead end alley, so I and my girly cake chick friends prayed and asked God to honour a deadline day. He did and it was great to know the TRUTH and for the truth to set me free! He is such an awesome God and a time of experiencing the kindness of God. When God speaks, release comes. Isaiah 45 v 3.

6. Also, I have been on a job search as my hours were reduced and I needed to find full time work as part time work wasn't a long term viable option. It was a hard search at times, seemingly relentless and almost soul destroying journey. I asked God if something could please be just dropped in my lap. I shouldn't have been surprised when a few weeks ago it did just that but I was! It reminded me of the WAIT and the NOW. The wait can seem like forever but, in God's time, when God says now it happens in an instant.

7. It has been a great year for quality TIME with friends and family and with God too. Practising hospitality, friends coming round and sitting on the sofa when I have been tired and spending time with me. Friends have come and stayed here, rather than me travelling to see them and each and every visit has been a blessing. Lots of time to pray and think, to journal and to ask God more of what this word change means for me. Psalm 84 and Song of Solomon 2 v 4 has been great ones!

8. A great family holiday, a few parties to dress up posh and wear my lovely pink and red shoes that carry the label GORGEOUS, time to begin to look at some of my family history and roots and DISCOVER new things. FASCINATING. My NEW kitten Tudur arrived - his Welsh name means divine gift and he really is!

9.It has been a year of REFRESHING in ways that have taken me out of my comfort zone. I read this - Exodus 2 v 15. to be sat down at the well (refreshing) is a desert experience. God lovingly draws us apart for a season and strips us of our busyness and our ability to operate in our strengths. He has not abandoned us and he is not judging us. These are precious things when we listen with a new intensity. We can recognise anew our dependency on Him and our intimacy with Him is deepened.
"In the desert He found him in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him. He guarded him as the apple of His eye. The Lord alone led Him."

It has been my special 1:1 support time with God this last year. I will take these 9 truths from 2009 with me into 2010... and looking forward to FLOURISH very much indeed.

My turn to join Turn the page Tuesday

I have joined in, today, just now, with some of a kind... for Turn the page Tuesday to reflect on a book I have enjoyed.
As it is December, I am going to tell you about this book I really enjoyed reading last Christmastime: December by Elizabeth H. Winthrop.
I loved it because it was a fairly easy read, interesting family dynamics and a fascinating storyline with an 11 year old child who is an elective mute! As this "winter's tale" unravels, we learn more about the family and why this girl is such a determined mute and, of course, how this wintry tale resolves.
I could have told you about another wintry tale, Light on snow by Anita Shreeve but you can read a bit about it here at Some of a Kind.
If, like me, you love to read - especially curled up on the sofa during the wintry months then try a new book and join in TTPT!
